The TVX Doctoral Consortium (DC) serves as a forum for PhD students to share ideas about the development, use, and evaluation of interactive television, high-definition TV, VR/AR media consumption, and online video user experiences. A great benefit would be to compare approaches, discuss research problems and receive feedback from senior experts of the International Interactive Television/Media community.

PhD students working on topics as below are invited to submit a paper to the Doctoral Consortium for TVX2018.

  • AI/big data: Use of big data, AI, deep learning and machine learning approaches to increase value of content and experience. This can include advanced computational systems based on content and/or user generated data to support content production, recommendation systems, interactive/synchronous environments, collective intelligence and crowdsourcing, or location-based and context-aware applications and
  • Social computing: Media consumption and production space with social technologies, IoT, social media and connected viewing.
  • Immersive experiences: Explorations of augmented, mixed and virtual reality, UHD TV, second third and fourth screens for content production, delivery and consumption. Novel forms of content production and content consumption using purpose-built head mounted devices as a stand-alone experience or in combination with traditional viewing devices. Enabling technologies and studies into how users respond to immersive experiences and how engaging/limiting they might find these forms of content Methodologies to evaluate added value and encouraging repeat consumption.
  • User experience & interaction design: how and why people consume and interact with online video and television (and with each other) and how such systems should be designed to provide easy, efficient, engaging and novel user experiences, including social aspects. This includes novel user interface designs, interaction system designs, architecture, user-centered design methods and approaches, and quality of experience measurement and monitoring.
  • Content production: Content production paradigms including cross-platform services, interactive and transmedia storytelling, personalization, and immersive media production.
  • Systems & infrastructures: The architecture, design, deployment, and evaluation of systems and infrastructures that support TV and online video, including the delivery, transmission, and synchronization of media in scenarios such as entertainment, gaming, education, and healthcare.
  • Devices & interaction techniques: The design, architecture, usage and evaluation of devices and interaction techniques that enable a connected ecosystem of devices and create valuable new capabilities for online video and television.
  • Media studies: Consumption practices, changing behavior as well as adoption and domestication of new TV-related services, and quality of This topic also includes research on ethical, regulatory, and policy issues as well as novel mechanisms for evaluating and measuring the impact of TV and online video.
  • Business models & marketing: Novel business models and marketing strategies for the new media landscape of TV and online video (for example OTT services). This topic includes studies around novel ways of advertising models and strategies (for example targeted advertising, programmatic buying).


Submissions should describe PhD research that is at a stage where feedback from the international interactive TV/Media community might be of value. Thus, it is expected that students who will submit papers should have specified the research problems that their work will address, and have already made (or are close to making) their PhD research proposal. They should also have at least a year of work remaining to complete their PhD thesis.

Submissions are of a paper that should be between 2-4 pages (including references). The paper should be in regular SIGCHI paper format. They should be well organised and structured in a way that demonstrates the links between the concepts presented, and they should clearly specify:

  • A real world problem that relates to and motivates the PhD
  • The concrete research problem(s) that the (proposed) PhD is addressing and how this fits into the bigger picture of other research that addresses the real world problem
  • The aims and objectives of the research
  • The methods used to achieve the objectives and the proposed solution(s), including a brief description of work done so far and a tentative plan for future work
  • The main contribution(s) of the research to interactive TV/media experiences and justification why the contribution will lead to a PhD


1. Gary Marsden Student Development Fund for TVX (Deadline: 15th November 2017 and around February & May 2018)
In order to better support students from and currently based in developing countries pursuing HCI/UX, ACM SIGCHI Gary Marsden Student Development Fund now covers all HCI relevant conferences and SIGCHI sponsored summer/winter schools. The purpose is to support growth of HCI in developing worlds by sponsoring SIGCHI student members who are postgraduate students from and currently based in developing countries to attend HCI relevant events. In the last two years, 36 students from around the world were awarded by the fund. For more information about applying for the funding, please see the fund guidelines:

2. “Hanyang” University’s Travel Funds for TVX2018 (Deadline: 1 March 2018)   

The host University of ACM TVX 2018, Hanyang University, specially supports Asian postgraduate students to apply for participating TVX2018 taking place at Seoul, Korea. Two students who will be accepted for the papers, demo, doctoral consortium presentation will be selected for the eligibility of the fund. It includes a return airfare and registration fee supports. Applications should be directed to (Hokyoung Ryu, A General Chair of TVX2018)


It is a full day event (26th June, 2018), and students will present and share their topics on that day with senior experts. Students will be given “elevator speech” ( ~ 2 minutes) at the plenary & at the social event (or closing ceremony).


Papers will be published in the conference proceedings (FigShare), not indexed in the ACM Digital Library.
